"Adult World Connection" is one of High Tech High's goals for its students. We provide connections to the adult world for students at every grade level, but it gets really serious in Junior Year: juniors aren't just "connected" to the adult world - for four weeks, they're part of it, working full-time as an intern in a professional organization (past internships have ranged from architecture firms, recording studios, and internet startups to biology labs, nonprofits, and even other schools!). These internships aren't just about filing papers and making coffee. Working with an on-site mentor, every student designs and completes a personal project whose product will be of tangible benefit to the company.

Logistics

  • 2019 Internship dates: In 2019, Internships last for four weeks from Monday, May 13th to Friday, June 7th
  • Insurance: Interns are covered by HTH liability insurance while on-site or participating in any activity related to their internship.
  • Pay: Internships are unpaid. Interns may be paid after internship hours, after school, or in the summer at mentor's discretion. Donations are accepted to the program for transportation and other expenses.
  • Transportation: Transportation will be provided either by the student’s own car, public transportation, or a parent.

"My internship took place at the Prima Materia Art Studio in San Diego. My experience was full of learning how to adapt to the work world, and communicating with my co-workers. I'm grateful for my experience at my internship, because without it, I wouldn't have gained the skills I have today."

"During my Junior Year, I worked with seventy year old war machines and modern tools to present beautiful artifacts of history at a museum.."

Last year I interned at the Bressi Ranch Pet Hospital in Carlsbad for four weeks. At my internship, I helped technicians with different tasks while working on my project, which focused on the history of golden retrievers and medical history (disorders and bone structure facts).   Interning at Bressi was amazing and unforgettable, not only did I learn new things about the veterinary life but I learned a lot from my co-workers.
